Cougars Appoint Head Coach for Inaugural Season

As part of the Coalville Cougars preparation for their inaugural season playing within the Men’s Division Four of the EBL, they are pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Ellis as their new Head Coach for the 2009/10 season.

Ellis has been a qualified coach since 2001 having coached a number of different age groups within the current national league structure. Ellis has been involved with basketball locally since the early 1990s and is well known as a member of the Leicester Riders basketball club having undertaken a number of different roles and responsibilities within that organisation.

Ellis is delighted to be offered the opportunity to coach the Cougars in this their first year of competing in the EBL. “It is an opportunity too good to let slip by, the challenge now is to put together a group of individuals who are committed and enthusiastic, and are seeking to take the next step in playing basketball at a higher level”. Dates for Coalville Cougars EBL tryout sessions will be announced shortly.

The forthcoming season will present the Coalville club with the opportunity to further develop basketball playing opportunities for all people across Leicestershire and in particular the North West region of the county. With the development of the national league side this now sees the club firmly established as part of the local basketball landscape, complimenting their already well established junior and local league presence within the county.

Coalville Cougars are now looking to fill the roles of Assistant Coach and Team Manager, and would be pleased to hear from anyone considering either of these positions.

So close for Junior Cougars

Coalville Basketball Club would like to congratulate the newly formed Junior Cougars on their 3rd place finish in the Leicestershire Junior Basketball League. Unfortunately the juniors failed to win one of their final two games which would have put them at the top of the league.

However Junior Development Coach, Steven Farmer is very optimistic about the future, "For a brand new team finishing in third place and managing to beat every team in the league at least once is a great success".

For the 2009/10 season some of the Junior Cougars will be stepping up into the senior league to take the place of some 'older' players moving to the new 'Coalville Retro Cougars' team. This new team along with the planned EBL National League team and partnership with the Leicester Riders will provide an outlet for all players to go through the Cougars system right to the top level of British Basketball.

The Junior Cougars will now have two more fixture dates, one being a Cup Tournament and the other a Play-Off  Tournament with Trophy Ceremony.

Cougars sign Riders 'Young Guns'

As part of the recent partnership, with the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders, Coalville Basketball Club have signed Emile Hopkins and Mike Martin to their roster for the 2008/09 season. The pair both made their BBL debuts for the Leicester Riders last season and, along with the Cougars, will continue to play for the Leicester club this season.

Cougars Chairman, Lee Alesbrook said, "I'm very excited to have Emile and Mike working with the club. They are committed to our National League preparations and this is an ideal situation to get some consistency in place. Both Emile and Mike have been playing in our summer league so we know they have been working hard over the summer".

Emile can run the floor and is an incredible athlete, whilst Mike is a precise shooter of the ball. Both have shown a great work ethic in their time with the Riders and will hopefully continue with this for Coalville.

Riders Deal to boost Cougars

Coalville Basketball Club are pleased to announce their new partnership with the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders. The deal will allow both clubs to assist each other both on and off the court. The Riders will be able to use the new Cougars National League team to develop their players whilst the Cougars are only too happy with the situation helping to improve their 'home grown' talent.

Russell Levenston Riders GM commented "It is great to be in partnership with the Cougars, I have been impressed with them since I came to Leicester and they come with a reputation of always pushing the limits of what a Basketball club can offer. We have been working with them for the last 12 months but now we have an official agreement we can take large steps forward. Along with the obvious benefits for both clubs with regards to developing talent, we now have the opportunity to provide quality coaching throughout North West Leicestershire".

One of the key aspects of the new partnership will be the continuity with players, tactics and even the Cougars training venue will be shared between the two clubs. To further this continuity the Coalville Cougars have appointed Mindaugas Janiska as head coach of their main A team squad for the 2008/09 season. This latest development comes as part of the build up to the Cougars National League programme scheduled to tip off for the 2009/10 season.

The Lithuanian guard, known as 'MD', plays professionally for the Leicester Riders and he represented Lithuania at U-18 level. He also spent some time at college in America and briefly played for Eiffel Towers in Holland’s top division.

"We’re delighted to have MD on board," said spokesman Simon Hoult. "He has a track record as a professional player and his experience should help Cougars take their next step. I believe this is MD's first coaching job but he knows the game inside out and more importantly he plays a very similar style to the Cougars being aggressive at both ends of the court".

With the season less than 3 weeks away, more news is expected soon.

Hermitage backs Cougars National Program

Coalville Basketball Club are pleased to announce their new partnership with the Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitwick, Coalville. In anticipation of the Cougars National League team to launch for the 2009/10 season the Cougars will familiarise themselves with the 800 seater venue by hosting their National Founders Cup games there during the 2008/09 season.

The Hermitage Leisure Centre will provide all the capacity and support the Cougars need to expand along with the ability to create a true family atmosphere. Fans of the new National League team will be able to take advantage of the great facilities and could even have a dip in the pool before games or have a drink with the players in the bar afterwards.

Centre Manager, Duncan Gibb said "The centre has historically been a huge supporter of local clubs and has been involved in a number of successful partnerships, which include North West Leicestershire Comets Volleyball Club's participation in the National Volleyball League, and the setting up of a link to feed young players into Coalville Rugby Club from our training partnership with Leicester Tigers.

We have been hugely impressed with the commitment and vision shown by those behind the scenes at the Cougars, and will be looking to work closely with them in not only the delivery of league basketball within the district, but also in offering top quality coaching opportunities to local youngsters".
